Language; In gender Perspective

The great invention of humans is “language” this is the unique traits of humans which distinguish them from other creatures because they interact, discuss their ideas, helping each other to achieve their common goals and to give a physical structure to their ideas.

As the human develops through evolution they go
t more knowledge through research and by using their minds about the universe thus their vocabulary of words develop too, they make more and more words, idioms and proverbs and add these words to their capacity to communicate and understand each other quickly and in simple and reliable way.

Language is not just a tool for communication but also enlightens the social and cultural beliefs. It also ensures the dignity of an individual in the society. Like most of society our Pashtun society inherited from a system which have prejudicial attitude and beliefs about gender, ethnic and religious groups.

Beside this we also have a Patriarchal society which represents man dominant society. So our language is also a male gender bias for example for Humanity we just use سړيتوب (Saritoob : means Manhood). We have million of examples when we talk about heroism, bravery , volour and dependency we use man personification even most of the time we say دا جينۍ ډير نره دا (Da jeny deera nara da: That's girl is a Male. And to give Intimidation to someone چې دا سړي بچې ېې نو باهر روزا (Che da sare bachy y no bahar roza : If you are son of male then come out)

On the other hand when we taunt a man by comparing their behavior to women like ښځونک (Khazonak : Gay), دا ښځو په شان کور کښې کينه (Set in home like women), دا ښځو خبرې (Da khazo khabry : women's Discussion).

What our language has systematically failed to account for is that history, be it Lar or Bar, is full of heroic women, who defied all the stereotypes stated above, Like Mewand Malala who rallied the Pashtun army against the British troops at the 1880 Battle of Maiwand and Nazo Abai of Malakand. We also produce Politicians like Begam Naseem Wali, Bushra Gohar, Malalai Joya.

Now this is our responsibility to ensure a gender neutral language. hence driving a gradual elimination of derogatory tendencies towards women in our language. Historically, language showcases the times and culture of period but the role of language goes beyond that. Language has the power to influence the thoughts of a nation and mould the culture of a society.

Pashto is a rich language must evolve to reflect and, in fact, inspire a culture proud of its women.
